As election day rapidly approaches, Mount Holyoke College student organization MHC Votes! organized their very own “I Voted” sticker competition in collaboration with the Weissman Center for Leadership. The iconic stickers, which have been a staple of American voting culture since the 1980s, will be getting their own Mount Holyoke twist. Participants in the contest were given the task of designing a sticker with unique visuals and themes. Everyone from the Mount Holyoke College community was encouraged to submit their sticker designs, regardless of artistic expertise.
The competition saw a variety of different submissions. Some were on the simpler side, like a neon green background with black text reading “I Voted,” an obvious nod to singer-songwriter Charli XCX’s viral “BRAT” album. Others had more intricate designs representing the Mount Holyoke community’s political engagement. Each submission was required to include the phrase “I Voted” but otherwise, the designs differed in everything from presentation to genre. Though designers were not allowed to use the Mount Holyoke College logo or seal in their stickers, there was a common theme represented throughout some of the designs: Jorge. Jorge, the white goose of Lower Lake, is something of a celebrity across campus, and acts as the unofficial mascot of Mount Holyoke.
The competition incorporated a voting element itself, allowing MHC students to vote for their favorite design via Google Forms.
Voting ended on Oct. 25, and the winner was announced shortly afterwards. The winning sticker will be given out for free on the date of general elections.
