College Cabinet holds open town hall meeting for student questions

Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Marcella Runell Hall and other members of the Mount Holyoke Cabinet held a town hall meeting open to students on Monday, April 26. In notifying students of the event, Hall wrote that the town hall would be “an opportunity for [students] to learn and ask questions about how the college works and about the present and future of Mount Holyoke.”

Smith College implements community-focused policing reforms

In July of 2018, a call was placed to Smith College campus police regarding the presence of a black student on campus who “seemed out of place.” The student in question was a Smith sophomore working in a summer program designed to encourage high school girls to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The incident made national news and sparked intense debate regarding Smith Campus Police practices and racial profiling.

Guest injured in violent altercation at Blanchard campus party

Early Sunday morning, multiple campus police officers, local South Hadley police and an ambulance were called to the Blanchard Community Center Great Room, where a person had reportedly been cut by a knife. These reports remain unconfirmed.

Campus Police concerns continue into new school year

Beginning in July 2020, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges will operate separate campus police departments. The change was announced to the Mount Holyoke community in an email statement by Shannon Gurek, Mount Holyoke Vice President for Finance and Administration and Treasurer.

The Mount Holyoke and Smith College shared campus police departments have appointed Daniel Hect as their new police chief, effective this past week. Hect replaced Raymond LaBarre, who had served as interim chief of police since July 6, 2012.

Microwave mishap in MacGregor Hall alarms student residents

Students evacuated MacGregor Hall and Ham Hall for two hours on Friday evening due to misuse of a microwave. As smoke filled the second floor of MacGregor, it set off the building’s fire alarms.
