Ice Hockey defeats Dartmouth

BY KATE TURNER ’21 & CASEY ROEPKE ’21

The Mount Holyoke Ice Hockey team routed Dartmouth 13-10 on Sunday, Nov. 3, bringing the Lyons their first win in seven years.

The team started strong, with a goal two minutes into the first period from right wing Eloise Arnot ’20. Arnot’s goal was followed two minutes later by another from right wing Emily Gitlin ’22, and, quickly after, a third from center Bria Carlson ’23. It was at this point that the energy on the ice began to seriously change.

The team went on to score ten more goals, including a point from Audrey Putman ’20 in the second period, four more from Gitlin, two from Carlson, and a second from Arnot. The final goal of the game was scored by Caroline Knote ’20 in the game’s third period, with 6:55 left on the clock.

With ten goals, Dartmouth put up a rousing defense but were unable to best the Lyons, whose victory marked not only their first of this season, but the first in many years.

“Being a team that for so many people it’s their first time ice skating — and definitely their first time playing hockey ... anything that we do well is the result of practice and preparation,” said Ruth Doherty ’21, who played right wing on Sunday.

“Prior to going into this season, I was like, ‘We’re not going to win a single game, but that’s okay.’ And we won a game, and that’s wonderful,” Doherty said. “I think it is hopeful. It is definitely something that makes us more excited — we do have the ability to win, and I think that does a lot for attitude and outlook.”

“It was just really exciting to watch — I think that everyone watching got really into it also,” Greer said. “I’ve been to a lot of the ice hockey games, and the energy [on Sunday] was some of the best that I’ve seen.”

Doherty hopes that the team’s success will inspire them as they move forward through their season. “I’m hoping that everyone will go in wanting to try harder, because I know that we can continue to improve,” she said.
