Lyons’ recap: athletic teams return to campus over J-Term

Swim and Dive

The Lyons’ Swim and Dive team traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida for a training trip on Jan 2 and returned to campus on Jan. 9. They continued their official season on Jan. 10 against Clark University and Wheaton College. They beat Clark, their fellow New England Women’s and Men’s Conference (NEWMAC) competitor, by a total of 126 points. The Lyons fell to Wheaton, who bested them by 93 points.

On Jan. 14, Swim and Dive competed in a tri-meet against Trinity College and Vassar College. Diving saw some first place finishes: Samantha Nemivant ’20 won the one-meter board and Kathryn Murphy ’22 took first in the three-meter.

The next meet was the Mount Holyoke Invitational on Jan. 18-19 against Wellesley College, Smith College, Merrimack College and Western New England University. The Lyons took third place overall totaling 767 points. Nemivant won diving and earned a score of 455.10, a national qualifying score in the 11-dive competition.

On Jan. 25, Mount Holyoke College Swim and Dive hosted a senior meet against Simmons College. Seniors Natalie Burkett, Ally Dunlap, Sam Nemivant, Sarah Ratzlaff, Olivia Vejcik and Jane Zhang were honored and congratulated for their time on the team.

The Lyons started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Swimmers Anais Magner ’23, Erin Schrama ’23, Tamara Mukulu ’21 and Caitlyn Richmond ’21 were in first with a time of 1:59.61 minutes. Simmons followed with 2:00.91. Swim and Dive will continue its season on Feb. 1 against the Western New England Golden Bears at Springfield, Massachusetts.

Track and Field

The Mount Holyoke College Track and Field team started their season over the break. They competed at the Greater Boston Track Club (GBTC) Invitational hosted by Harvard University on Jan. 19.

Isabelle Wohlin ’21 took fourth in the women’s open triple jump, producing a career-best mark of 10.11 meters, which makes for a number 6 all-time at Mount Holyoke in the event.

Caitlin Lynch ’20 cleared 1.50 meters in the women’s open high jump. Lynch tied for fifth place in the event.

Lucy Sternberg ’23 produced the fastest time in the 60 meter dash with a career best of 8.76 seconds. Sternberg’s time moved her up to number 10 all-time at Mount Holyoke College.

Simone Jacob ’21 finished second in her section of the one mile run with a personal best time, ahead of Sydney Nash ’22. Devan Ravino ’23 also had a career- best time in the mile. Jacob finished fourth in the 800 meter race with Nash placing ninth.

The Lyons also raced in the John Thomas Terrier Classic and the Massasoit Classic Meet. Both were non-scoring competitions for the Lyons.

Track and field will compete again at the Wesley- an Indoor Invitational on Feb. 1.

Squash

Squash continued their season over winter break, facing losses against Yale University, Bowdoin College, Bates College, Colby College, Williams University and Wesleyan University. On Jan. 25, Squash broke their losing streak against Bard College, winning with a shutout score of 8-0. Mihiliya Methsarani ’22 had the number one spot against her competitors.

The next day, the Lyons fell to Connecticut College by 8-1, Hamilton College by 7-2 and Brown University by 7-1.

The next competition for Squash will be on Feb. 4 at Amherst College.

Basketball

The Mount Holyoke Basketball team competed in NEWMAC opener against host Wheaton College on Jan. 18. The Mount Holyoke Lyons fell to Wheaton 81- 21.

Annika Brooks ’21 had a team high of 12 points as well as three rebounds. Mikayla McEwen ’22 had a team best of 10 rebounds and two steals. Maria-Lucia Delgado ’21 came up with six rebounds and two points.

Mount Holyoke Basketball also competed against Springfield College and Emerson College later in January. After these games, the Lyons now have a record of 1-17.
