The Lyons basketball team fell to out-of-conference opponent Lesley University on Saturday, Nov. 16, with a final score of 63-58. Lesley edged Mount Holyoke in the second and fourth quarters by a small margin of points, beating them by five in the second and six points in the fourth.
Despite the loss, Mount Holyoke College’s team had several accomplishments, including Hannah Goen ’27 scoring a career high 20 points, the most points scored by a Mount Holyoke player since Jan. 11, 2023 by Kendall Maurer ’26. Alex Twomey ’26 and Helena Robinson ’28 each scored 10 points, and Twomey additionally had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, rounding out the team highs in both defensive and offensive categories. The Lyons managed to outshoot the Lynx, with a 41% accuracy rate compared to the Lynx 34%. Mount Holyoke had 45 rebounds to Lesley’s 38, scoring five points off rebounds and second chances and 26 points from the paint.
While the Lyons took an early lead through the beginning of the second quarter, they were quickly tied by the Lynx and ended the quarter with a score of 19-19. The lead switched hands as many as six times throughout the third quarter, ending with the Lyons in the lead with a score of 42-41. Two shots landed by Goen in the start of the fourth quarter gave Mount Holyoke a 49-43 lead, however it was diminished by a 7-0 run made by Lesley, taking back the lead with roughly six minutes left in the game. Layups and three point shots made by the hosting Lynx brought the score to 62-55 with about one minute left in the game, scoring only two points to Mount Holyoke’s three before the end of the game.
Mount Holyoke Basketball has since played Westfield State University and Mitchell College, and will next compete against Anna Maria College on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
