Every summer, Mount Holyoke students go off into the real world for internships and experiences that will shape them for the rest of their lives. Some of our MoHos venture into more artistic endeavors. Arts & Entertainment talked to some of these students about their summers and the work they did in their respective fields.

Singer Janelle Monae released the music video for her new single “Make Me Feel” last week to much fanfare. The first single off of her upcoming album, “Dirty Computer,” is a bonafide crop-growing, skin-clearing hit that appeals to fans, old and new.

In the midst of the push for more diversity in Hollywood and #TimesUp, there has been an added pressure on Hollywood to give women of color the opportunities — and pay — that they deserve. According to the website Women and Hollywood, women accounted for “only 28 percent of all creators, directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and directors of photography working on broadcast network, cable and streaming programs.” Here are some women of color in entertainment who are on top of their game and whose future you should be paying attention to.

Last week, the Mount Holyoke dance department held their annual faculty dance concert in the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex. The show featured student performances choreographed by faculty from Mount Holyoke and some of the Five Colleges. The show’s program describes the Five College dance department and the event as a “collaboration founded on a commitment to honor, respect and support the individual perspectives on dance characteristic of each campus.”

Current members and alums of the Mount Holyoke a cappella group, the Victory Eights, gathered for a concert in Chapin Auditorium on Saturday to celebrate the group’s 75th anniversary. The V8s are the oldest historically all-female collegiate a cappella group in the nation. Saturday’s event reunited current members with members from the 80s, 90s and 2000s.

Daniel Caesar explores love, loss and independence in “Freudian”

Toronto R&B singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar’s debut EP, “Freudian,” is a journey through love and human error set to bluesy, gospel-inspired tracks. The 10-track album, released on Aug. 27, fits right into the neo-soul revival bringing soulful sounds to a mainstream audience.

“13 Reasons Why” sparks discussion

“13 Reasons Why,” Netflix’s new show based on Jay Asher’s 2007 novel of the same name, premiered on March 31. The series, named the “most tweeted about show of 2017” by Entertainment Weekly, has become a hit — but also sparked controversy around its portrayal of mental illness and suicide, both online and on campus.

The Mount Holyoke theatre arts department’s spring season continues with a bang with the production of Masteroff’s “Cabaret,” directed by Noah Tuleja. The musical, set in 1931 Berlin, explores the lives of patrons of the Kit Kat Klub before the rise of the Nazis.

Waka Flocka Flame to headline spring concert

Waka Flocka Flame will perform at Mount Holyoke’s spring concert on April 15 at 9 p.m. in Chapin Auditorium. The concert will also feature DJ Whoo Kid, who has worked with T.I. and 50 Cent, and opening artist DJ AfroPanther, a DJ from Western Massachusetts.
