A film worth fighting for: Disney struggles with remake of “Mulan”

“Dishonor on your whole family! Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow!” The famous line comes from Disney’s 1998 animated film, “Mulan.” With Disney’s recent fetish for remaking films, it’s not surprising that the company decided to give “Mulan” the live-action treatment.

Since her 2011 departure from Disney, Demi Lovato has been taking great strides to prove herself to be more than a childhood star. Last year she released her sixth album, “Tell Me You Love Me,” and, this February, she embarked on a world tour. The international portion starts in Brazil in May with the U.S. leg of the tour finishing in Newark, NJ this Monday.

Music took center stage Sunday night as the Grammys celebrated artists, producers, songwriters and other members of the music industry. The 60th show featured nine of the 84 awards being handed out on-air between memorable performances from popular artists, such as Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna.

“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Mummy” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” are just a few examples of this year’s releases that are reboots or remakes of previous films. The Thirsty Mind stage was in the spotlight Sunday as students celebrated Mother Nature with an open mic event. Hosted by the Mount Holyoke College International Student Organizing Committee (ISOC), the event, titled “Mother Nature,” featured students performing music and poetry that explored the topic.

Theater Department creates a monster with FRANKENSTEIN

The Mount Holyoke College department of theatre arts has craeated a spectacular monster with its production of FRANKENSTEIN. Directed by Noah Tuleja, the play is Jonathan Yukich’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous novel. The production reanimates the torturous relationship between Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his creation, the Creature, with standout performances by Julia Cole ’19 and Tamia Williams ’19.

Rebecca Grossman ’18 participates in the Student Guide program offered by the Mount Holyoke Art Museum. The program gives students a hands-on experience working in a museum. While in the program, students meet with museum staff for two and a half hours each week throughout the academic year and are required to give at least two tours a semester.

Lady Gaga reveals a new side of herself in her fifth studio album, “Joanne,” released Oct. 21, 2016. “Joanne” diverges from Gaga’s previous pop sound and embraces a raw, stripped-down version of Lady Gaga. The result is an honest album in which Gaga boldly expresses her natural self.

Nightfest performers release folk rock album

After performing at Nightfest earlier this month, folk-rock duo The New Rockwells officially released their debut studio album, Live from Carnegie Hall. Frontman Marty Boyle and Ben Muller, who plays piano and saxophone, worked with other local artists to record new material and old favorites, like their 2015 single “Never Let You Go,” which appears as track six.
