On Feb. 8, the Mount Holyoke College Lyons’ basketball team played against the Wellesley College Blue, a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competitor. The match was the Game of the Week, with several student-athletes, parents and friends attending the match. The Lyons’ soccer team hosted the event. The local non-profit organization, Girls Inc. of the Valley, attended the game as well.
Wellesley scored the first 14 points before 6:23, before Mikayla McEwen ’22 scored a triple at the 1:27 mark of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Wellesley scored six unanswered points. McEwen earned a free throw at the 6:04 mark, to make the score 22-5 in favor of Wellesley.
“We face a lot of adversity being a young, small team, but it’s how we respond to it that speaks volumes about our program,” said captain Katlyn Grover ’20.
Kyra Sanborn-Burch ’23 opened the second half with two free throws. Maria- Lucia Delgado ’21 scored a free throw as well, bringing the score to 43-15, Wellesley.
The match ended in a loss for Mount Holyoke College with a score of 64-26. The Lyons are now 1-20 overall.
“Despite the tough loss against Wellesley, it’s important that we keep things in perspective so that we stay motivated,” Grover said. “If we see loss as a learning experience, rather than a setback, we will continue to improve and eventually have another victory of our own to celebrate.”
