On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Mount Holyoke College Lyons basketball team faced off against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Beavers. The Lyons were defeated by the Beavers in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup 79-15.
The Lyons were led by Ellie Hayward ’23 who tallied eight points and three rebounds in the contest. Forward Annika Brooks ’21 notched five points and five rebounds, as well as one steal. Kyra Sanborn-Burch ’23 was the first player from Mount Holyoke to score in the game, notching the sole basket for the Lyons’ during the first quarter.
Sanborn-Burch said, “The NEWMAC is a really great conference and the whole team is looking forward to competing with some of them in the next few weeks.”
The Lyons loss to the Beavers this weekend was the largest loss that the team has suffered all season. Despite this setback, Sanborn-Burch is optimistic for the team’s future. “We enjoy playing like we have nothing to lose, and we will hopefully keep challenging other teams just like they have challenged us,” she said.
The loss to MIT leaves the Lyons with an overall record of 1-19, and a record of 0-5 in NEWMAC contests. Mount Holyoke College plays host to Wellesley College for their next NEWMAC match-up on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
