Mount Holyoke Soccer tied their senior day matchup against Wheaton College on Saturday, Oct. 19, in the 79th minute, with a goal by Jessica Drent ’26. Mount Holyoke College defeated NEWMAC rival Wheaton in last year’s season, however this year added another tie onto their current 3-4-5 record in the 2024 season.
While holding the lead in shots on goal, Wheaton only managed to score with seven seconds left in the first half, as a result of Mount Holyoke’s tight defense. The goal was scored by a quick slip in defense, allowing Wheaton to sneak around goalie Clarissa Govea ’26 to score at close range. Govea had seven saves throughout the game, saving all but one of Wheaton’s eight shots on goal, three more than Mount Holyoke’s five.
With 17 minutes left in the game, Mount Holyoke was able to even the score. Similar to Wheaton’s goal, a ball misplaced by a Wheaton defender slipped into their penalty box, giving Hannah Ellis ’25 a chance to bring the ball to the end line and cross it to Drent, who then headed the ball into the right side of the goal. This goal marked Drent’s first career goal, and Ellis’ first career assist.
Mount Holyoke Soccer has since competed in matchups against Clark University on Wednesday, Oct. 23, and the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, Oct. 26. They will next face local competition against Smith College on Wednesday, Oct. 30, on the Mount Holyoke soccer field.
