In Newport, Rhode Island, the Mount Holyoke Field Hockey team played against host and fellow NEWMAC member Salve Regina University on Saturday, Oct. 19. Despite goals scored by Linnea Alsted ’27 and Sophia Guziewicz ’25, the Lyons were unable to overcome the Seahawks in a 5-2 defeat.

Three goals were scored by the Seahawks in the first quarter, putting Mount Holyoke at an early deficit. The second and third quarters brought in two goals for the Lyons, with the second quarter of the match witnessing Alsted’s seventh goal of the season, getting the Lyons on the scoreboard. Guziewicz’s 11th goal this season came in the third quarter, bringing the score up to 5-2 by the end of the quarter with Salve Regina still leading. No goals were scored in the fourth quarter by either team, ending the game with a shutout quarter for both teams.

"I thought we got ourselves into a hole in the first quarter, which was difficult to dig out of. That said, I was proud of our team for never giving up and playing hard until the final whistle,” Head Coach Andy Whitcomb said in an email to Mount Holyoke News. “I thought Sophia Guziewicz, Scout Climie, and Diane Lee, in particular, played very well for us. We had a solid practice [yesterday] and will look to re-group this week."

Mount Holyoke had 12 outshoots and eight shots on goal, compared to Salve Regina’s nearly doubled outshoots with 23 and 17 shots on goal, with Salve Regina also having a penalty corner advantage of 9-6. Goalkeeper and captain Rachel Katzenberg ’25 secured 10 saves in 40 minutes of action and Ainsley Gruener ’26 achieved two saves in 20 minutes of play during the shutout fourth quarter.

“The team fought till the last whistle and I am proud of the team for never giving up,” Katzenberg said in an email to Mount Holyoke News.

“We found ourselves in a challenging situation early on in the game, falling behind. However, we played with much more strength and determination in the second half, showing improvement in both strategy and execution,” Assistant Coach Laurissa Montigny said in an email to Mount Holyoke News. “Unfortunately, despite our better performance, time ran out before we could close the gap on the scoreboard. It was a tough match, but the team's resilience and effort in the second half were commendable.”

Mount Holyoke has since hosted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and competed against Wheaton College on Saturday, Oct. 26. They will be facing the Rivier University Raiders on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. on the Mount Holyoke turf.
