The Mount Holyoke College Lacrosse Team officially kick-started their season with a home game against Simmons University on Feb. 24. Linnea Alsted ’27, Teya Broad-Wright ’27, Mackenzie Hillman ’27 and Syd Baker ’27 made their collegiate lacrosse debut with the season opener. Mount Holyoke started with a 3-1 lead at the beginning of the second quarter, but ultimately, Simmons caught up and prevailed with a final score of 17-4.
Mount Holyoke’s Emi Bisson ’26 and Langley Berat ’26 both scored for the Lyons. In the first quarter, Bisson scored 2 goals, one being the first goal of the match. Bisson scored a second goal with a free position shot, raising the score to 2-1. Bisson’s unassisted tally early in the second quarter gave the Lyons a considerable 3-1 lead against the visiting team.
With Simmons University leading 6-3 and only 1 minute and 28 seconds left in the second quarter, Berat helped even out the scoreboard to 6-4 with an assist from Bisson. With only a minute left in the second quarter, Simmons’ Julia Chausse was able to score an unassisted goal and bring the score to 7 for the Sharks and 4 for the Lyons.
Despite the Lyons’ consistent effort on the field, Simmons kept Mount Holyoke from scoring any goals in the second half of the game. In the third and fourth quarters, Simmons was able to score 6 and 4 goals, respectively.
For Simmons, Chausse led with 3 goals, followed by Maddie Desimio-Maloney, who added 5 assists and scored 2 goals. Players Lauren Krupnikoff, Riley Wasiuk, Cameron Richards, Frida Turriza and Kat Wood each scored 2 goals for Simmons.
Baker, Mount Holyoke’s goalkeeper, successfully had 13 saves against the strong Simmons offense, while Simmons’ goalkeeper, Anya Younie, made 4 saves.
The Mount Holyoke Lacrosse team competes next against Nichols College on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in their first away game of the season.
