Mount Holyoke Basketball welcomes Abby Wemhoff as new head coach

Following six years as an assistant basketball coach at Juniata College, Abby Wemhoff has stepped into the role of head coach for Mount Holyoke College’s varsity basketball team. As a former Division III basketball player at University of Mount Union, with coaching experiences at both Waynesburg University and Juniata College, Wemhoff hopes to bring “good energy” to the team in an effort to have the players encourage each other during the season. She approaches coaching with an emphasis on attitude and effort, aiming not only to impart technical skills but also to cultivate qualities of character that will serve her players on and off the court.

Despite the Gamecocks’ near-perfect success in the last three seasons, their achievements seemed to have been lost in Caitlin Clark’s shadow.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum took place in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 13-16, hosting over 250 student-athletes from around the country. The athletes represented all three divisions of the NCAA, and the captain of Mount Holyoke’s basketball team, Marley Berano ’25, attended this year’s forum.

Despite the chilly evening air, students from Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges bustled with warmth and excitement in the New York Room of Mary Woolley Hall on March 3. Dinnertime chatter cascaded from table to table. Moments later, the event of the night, “A Dunk in Faith,” commenced.

NCAA to add four teams to women’s basketball championship bracket

In a unanimous vote on Thursday, Oct. 14, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee approved a proposal to expand the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship bracket by four teams. Beginning in 2022, the proposal would allow 68 teams to compete in the tournament instead of the previous 64. The same change was approved for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in 2011.

Mount Holyoke College Basketball saw New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action this past Saturday, facing Massachusetts rival Wheaton College in front of an energetic crowd at Mount Holyoke's home gymnasium. After numerous lead changes, Wheaton edged out MHC and the game concluded with a final score of 70-34.
